A colourful primary bedroom

This master bedroom was designed as a deeply personal retreat — cosy, comfortable, and unapologetically rich in colour. The brief was to create a space that felt unique to the owners, allowing their love of textiles and vibrant hues to take centre stage while still supporting rest and relaxation.

Respecting the home’s 1930s heritage, vintage pieces were carefully selected to reflect its era and then reimagined through fresh colour and contemporary fabrics. The result is a room that feels both nostalgic and distinctly modern.

The generous ceiling height allowed for the creation of a dramatic bespoke headboard, locally made in New Zealand. Its tall, architectural presence anchors the room, while the carefully chosen upholstery fabric ties together the surrounding palette and textures.

Vintage bedside tables were sourced to complement the character of the home and paired with playful contemporary lamps, creating a balance between old and new. Neutral bedding was selected to provide visual breathing space and an additional layer of texture, allowing the surrounding colours to shine without overwhelming the room. Custom Anna Grace Design cushions complete the bed, adding depth, softness, and personality.

A preloved freestanding wardrobe was also sourced and refinished in a warm pink, highlighting its decorative detailing while introducing a joyful focal point. At the window, a custom squab — subtly referencing the home’s Art Deco influences — transforms the seat into an inviting nook for reading or quiet moments.
